Senate Dems Want DHS, DOJ to Harass Citizens Who Patrol the Southern Border
Three Senate Democrats wrote to Attorney General Merrick Galrland, asking him to authorize the Department of Justice’s investigation of different militias that were patrolling the U.S.–Mexico border during the ongoing crisis.
“For years, unlawful paramilitary organizations have engaged in unofficial border missions — reminiscent of Ku Klux Klan border patrols — intended to illegally detain and harass immigrants. These activities undermine legitimate government authority and threaten public safety,” Sens. According to Sens. The Hill.
“Recently, many paramilitary groups have stepped up their efforts, creating an escalating crisis that must be a priority for both the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of Justice,” The letter continues.
The letter specifically mentions Patriots for America (PFA), Veterans on Patrol (VOP), and Patriots for America as examples of racist militias that patrol the border.
Sam Hall, the leader of the PFA, told Townhall that senators’ claims of their militia having racist motives were false. They work hard to stop illegal immigrants crossing the U.S.–Mexico border, and they provide assistance to those who need it, while waiting for law enforcement.
“It’s slanderous…I don’t know if there is going to be legal that can be taken there or not,” Hall stated. “We got plenty of media out there that have our mission, our message, and what we do, but it seems like none of these so-called journalists decide to any of that in their [letter] stories.”
Hall stated that his members often come across families or small children and have never needed to fire weapons at them. However, they do carry rifles as well as handguns because the southern border can be dangerous due to other criminals who illegally cross. They operate out of Texas and patrol in the Rio Grande Valley near Eagle Pass.
Hall said that although they cannot stop people crossing into the U.S. they do their best to make sure Border Patrol can intercept them. Hall also mentioned how his members have provided food and water for those in need, as well as praying alongside them. Hall stated that families often are pleased to see Hall’s group as they want their loved ones to be safe. “the gotaways, the people who don’t want to be caught, the drug smugglers, the human traffickers, they avoid us like the plague. Those are the ones we’re focused on…those are ones that are a lot more sneaky in what they do.”
Hall said that his group is not affiliated with VOP and has no knowledge of them. Hall stated that while he is certain the DOJ will not find any wrongdoing with PFA, the process of having to go through an unjustified probe is costly for a group that funds its trips via fundraising.
