The Pentagon sank a “high-altitude object” White House officials confirmed that Friday’s flight was in U.S. airspace just off Alaska’s coast.
The exact location wasn’t immediately specified. The FAA had already issued a Avise restriction on flight Friday for the area around Deadhorse, near the Prudhoe Bay oil fields on Alaska’s North Slope.
The object was at around 40,000 feet when it flew and was being photographed. “reasonable threat” John Kirby (White House National Security Council spokesperson) stated that civil flights should be safe.
Kirby claimed that President Joe Biden ordered military personnel to bring the object down. Kirby described the object as about the size a small car. It was not immediately clear what the object was.
The object fell in U.S. waters.
This development follows the U.S.’s downing of a Chinese spy balloon Saturday. Officials continue to recover debris from the object that was shot off South Carolina’s coast.
