Three Killed in Michigan State University Shooting, Suspect Dead

EAST LANSING, Mich. (Reuters)—A gunman opened fire on Monday night on the main campus of Michigan State University, killing three people and injuring five, before an hours-long manhunt for the suspect ended with his death, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot, police said.

Police said that the gunman, aged 43, had no connection to the university and that his motive was still unknown at an early morning news briefing, more than five hours after violence broke out on the sprawling East Lansing campus. It is located about 90 miles northwest from Detroit.

Details about the sequence of events remained sketchy, but Chris Rozman, interim deputy chief of the university police, said shots were fired in two locations – an academic building called Berkey Hall and the Michigan State University (MSU) Union building.

Rozman stated that police responded to the shooting by swarming campus shortly after 8 p.m. (0100 GMT). They found victims at both locations.

Rozman claimed that investigators didn’t have any information regarding the motive. He also stated that the university wasn’t aware of any threats made against the campus prior to Monday’s bloodshed.

Rozman said three victims were killed and five were taken to a hospital in the nearby city of Lansing, the state capital, all of them listed in critical condition. Two victims were killed at Berkey Hall, and one at the MSU Union.

Rozman reported that while officials refused to reveal any details regarding the victims, Rozman said some of their identities and connections to the university were still being determined.

Police did not immediately release the name or other details about the suspect and they remain baffled as to what caused the shooting.

“We have no idea why he came to campus to do this tonight,” Rozman said this to reporters.

Rozman stated that the gunman died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot approximately four hours after the bloodshed began.

“There is no longer a threat to campus. We believe there to be only one suspect in this incident,” He stated.

Rozman said that the suspect was also Rozman “was contacted by law enforcement off campus” One point, add, “that scene is being investigated as a crime scene.”

It is not clear if the gunman died after being confronted and arrested by police or whether he took his own lives during that encounter.

MSU police released two still images of the suspect taken from surveillance video. They showed him entering a building and then mounting.
