Suspect in Brooklyn U-Haul Rampage Identified as 62 Year Old Who “Wanted to Die”
On Monday, the suspected driver struck at least eight Brooklyn residents. Driving a U-Haul The truck was identified as Weng Sor, a 62-year-old man. Reports the New York Post.
According to NYPD, Sor shouted “Shoot me. I’m not stopping” at police as they tried to pull over his vehicle and later told officers he “”Was destined to die.”
The incident started around 11 am when Sor allegedly hit at least one person on a moped near 5th Avenue and the Bay Ridge Parkway. The vehicle was stopped by police and chased for 30 minutes.
The U-Haul was heading north towards Sunset Park. Surveillance footage shows it riding up onto a sidewalk at one point during the chase. The driver fled northbound on Gowanus Expressway. However, the vehicle was eventually stopped in Red Hook after hitting at least seven people. Two of them were riding mopeds.
A man in his 30s was seriously injured by a car accident near 4th Avenue. He was transported to Lutheran Hospital.
The eight victims included four who sustained minor injuries and two who were listed as in serious condition. Two of them were also listed as being in critical condition.
At a news briefing Keechant Sewell, NYPD commissioner, said: “Behind us is a U-Haul truck stopped successfully by the NYPD, ending a violent rampage through Brooklyn that left at least eight people injured.”
“We know a very limited amount about the suspect at this time. That’s part of our investigation,” Sewell stated. “There are approximately seven scenes that we have to process at this time.”
NYPD bomb squad searched U-Haul looking for explosives, but found only laundry detergent at the back.
There are currently no charges.
Rua Bishar was there to witness the events. “The truck was flying, way too fast, and hit the guy and he went down. Then it drove over him. It was horrible. The guy looked like he was dead. He was surrounded by people and he wasn’t moving.”
According to the New York Post police sources said that they were investigating whether Sor was using the truck, which was rented from Florida in February as a home, according to the outlet. According to the sources, Sor was also given two traffic tickets for using the Belt Expressway in the same truck on February 28th. “had one prior run-in with cops for a mental health call in 2019.”
“In that case, he was seen yelling and jumping into moving traffic on a street in Queens and taken to a local hospital for psychiatric evaluation,” The Post reports.
