Senior ISIS Leader Killed in Helicopter Raid, Four U.S. Service Members Injured
On Thursday night, four U.S. military personnel were injured by an explosion in a helicopter attack in northeast Syria.
Officials confirmed that the mission resulted in the death of a senior ISIS leader.
“Last night, during a partnered U.S. and Syrian Democratic Forces helicopter raid in northeastern Syria, an explosion on target resulted in four U.S. service members and one working dog wounded,” A statement was made by the U.S. Central Command.
“The U.S. service members and working dog are receiving treatment in a U.S. medical facility in Iraq,” According to the statement.
Hamza al-Homsi was the ISIS leader killed in the raid.
According to a U.S. official, the four servicemen who were wounded were part of an operation force that targeted al-Homsi.
According to the U.S. official three service members are said to be in stable condition and the fourth to have returned to duty.
According to an official, the working dog’s condition is described as stable.
About 900 U.S. troops are currently operating in northeastern Syria under the control of Syrian Kurdish forces known collectively as the Syrian Democratic Force. There are also approximately 2,500 American troops in Iraq.
American troops in both countries continue to partner with local forces to combat the Islamic State’s threat and prevent its resurgence.
The terror group was defeated militarily by the Syrian government in 2019. Since then, its leaders are in hiding to avoid being attacked by U.S forces.
