Activists Upset After Black Family That Received Property as “Reparations” Sells It Back to The Government

Activists are outraged that the Bruce family has sold the oceanfront property to Los Angeles County, where it was taken unjustly from its forebears last year.

As Breitbart News reported In 2021, the Bruce family story was compelling evidence for restitution

The land was abandoned for many decades before the city constructed a park on it in 1960. Later, Bruce’s Beach was named after it. Charles Bruce’s descendants sued to claim that the eminent-domain program was racist.

The city of Manhattan Beach seized the land and then transferred it to the state.

Finally, the land was finally declared a national park in 2022. Retour In an emotional public ceremony, the Bruce descendants were presented to them.

The However, New York Times ReportsThe family decided to sell the land to the county due to the difficulty in developing the beachfront property and the possibility of turning the asset into cash quickly.

Some activists were disappointed and this has made it difficult to debate wider racial reparations.

The Bruces’ decision not to sell has sparked fresh discussion about reparations goals and methods, much like those efforts are gaining momentum at universities and local government.

Activists who helped the Bruces secure their land and other observers were disappointed that the Bruce family decided to not hold it and to try to regain the vision of the ancestors.

“Say it ain’t so,” Tavis Smiley spoke on his radio program. “It was the quintessential example, to my mind at least, of how reparations should work. And many of us were heartened by this rare public example of government doing right by Black folk.”

It seems that activists are unable to distinguish between reparations of past wrongs in the abstract and restitution for specific damages to particular people, such as the racially motivated seizing of private property.

California and some local governments — including the City of San Francisco — are currently debating reparations for slavery, even though California was not a slave state and entered the U.S. as a free state in 1850.
