Venice Canals Run Dry as Italy Faces New Drought Alert

According to environmental groups and scientists, weeks of dry winter weather have raised concerns about Italy’s future drought.
Venice, where flooding is the primary concern, is facing unusually low tides which are making it difficult for water taxis, water taxis, and ambulances to navigate some its most famous canals.

“We are in a water deficit situation that has been building up since the winter of 2020-2021,” Daily Corriere della Sera quoted Massimiliano Pasqui, climate expert from CNR, as saying.
“We need to recover 500 millimetres in the north-western regions: we need 50 days of rain,” He concluded.

For 15 days, an anticyclone has been dictating weather conditions in western Europe. It brought milder temperatures than those normally experienced in the spring.
The latest weather forecasts however indicate the imminent arrival of snow and much-needed rain in the Alps.
