Alex Murdaugh Trial: Defense Witness Says Crime Scene Wasn’t Properly Cleared, Found Piece Of Skull ‘The Size Of A Baseball’
An ex-law partner of disgraced and a defense witness South Carolina Alex Murdaugh, an attorney, testified Wednesday to the fact that the crime scene at which Murdaugh and his wife were murdered was not properly cleared.
Mark Ball told jurors that he and more than a dozen other people – Murdaugh’s former law partners and friends – walked around the crime scene shortly after Murdaugh’s wife Maggie and son Paul were murdered. He stated that he arrived at the crime scene shortly after Murdaugh called 911. However, police arrived before him, The New York Post reported. reported.
Ball also stated that he returned to Murdaugh the day after the murders and found evidence left by investigators. This included shotgun pellets and clumps tissue.
“There was just a piece of Paul’s skull about the size of a baseball laying there,” Ball stated. “And there was a large bloodspot tissue out right off of the apron of that area right outside the feed room. That was there and it’s kind of like walking across the grave, just, it’s one of those things you just don’t do.”
Ball stated that he was allowed to enter the crime scene as it was not properly secured. He and other investigators were able to freely roam the area. He stated that it was raining on the night of the murders, and that water was being dripped onto Paul’s body as officers investigated the scene.
“It’s a crime scene. You don’t want water dripping all over the place, but more importantly, I thought it was pretty disrespectful. Paul was a good young man and quite frankly it just pissed me off,” Ball addressed jurors.
This wasn’t the first instance that defense lawyers have claimed that the crime scene wasn’t adequately secured. Last week, Murdaugh was arrested. Former housekeeper testified She found many odd things in her house after the murders. For example, the pots she made the night before were put away. They had been left there for her to use the next day.
Maggie’s pajamas, which she had been wearing all day, were found neatly on the floor at the entrance to the laundry room. This was something the housekeeper told her wouldn’t usually happen.
It looked like someone had shower in the home as there was a puddle, a towel, and a pair of khaki trousers next to the shower.
This, the defense claimed, shows how police failed to secure property while investigating.
