Report: US Sending Hundreds of Troops to Taiwan as China Threatens Invasion
In the face of a Chinese invasion, the U.S. is sending 200 troops to Taiwan. This comes amid rising tensions between Washington & Beijing.
According to officials, the military plans to send 100 to 200 troops to Taiwan. This will add to the 30 troops that were deployed last year. Wall Street Journal. This is part of a training programme to strengthen Taiwan’s defenses against China. “the largest deployment of forces in decades by the U.S. on Taiwan,” The Journal reported.
“We don’t have a comment on specific operations, engagements, or training, but I would highlight that our support for, and defense relationship with, Taiwan remains aligned against the current threat posed by the People’s Republic of China,” Fox News interviewed Lt. Colonel Marty Meiners, a Defense Department spokesperson. Part of the Taiwanese military is being trained by the Michigan National Guard.
This program expansion is occurring amid rising tensions between Washington, Beijing and the aftermath of the recent Chinese spy ball takedown. However, the training program was in place for many months before this balloon became a major news story.
Washington and Beijing have been strained by the United States’ support of Taiwan. As a sign of its military might, China launched missiles at Taiwan after Nancy Pelosi, former House speaker (D., Calif.), visited the island in August.
