Al Sharpton’s Half-Brother Pleads Guilty to Tax Fraud and Drug Conspiracy Charges

Rev. Al Sharpton Half-brother plead guilty to tax fraud, mail fraud and drug conspiracy charges Friday.

According to the Associated Press, Kenneth Glasgow is an Alabama pastor, activist for voting rights, and half-brother with the MSNBC host and Black pastor. He pleaded guilty in Montgomery federal court. 

Glasgow’s plea agreement allowed him to avoid a March trial for his charges. The pastor will be sentenced later.

Glasgow was also the founder of a ministry. “The Ordinary People Society.” It is described on the website as a non-profit organization: “faith-based organization that offers hope, without regard to race sex, creed, color or social status, to individuals and their families who suffer the effects of drug addiction, incarceration, homelessness, unemployment, hunger and illness.”

He also founded The “Prodigal Child Project,” Another non-profit is openphilanthropy.org. “organizes pastors in the southern U.S. in support of prisoners, former prisoners, their families, and communities.”

The 56-year old minister is an Alabama activist who has dedicated his career to fighting for former prisoners’ voting rights and reforming prisons. Sharpton’s minister is also a vocal critic of America’s prison system, law enforcement, and other criminal acts.

Prosecutors claimed that Glasgow had admitted to failing to pay during his political career. Income taxes On the thousands of dollars he took from his two charities and that he also committed Social Security Fraud.

According to AP Glasgow claimed “Social Security disability benefits by falsely claiming on mailed forms that he had trouble driving.” However, the prosecutors pointed out that the minister was issued multiple traffic citations between 2015-2020, which is evidence that he was driving.

Sharpton’s half brother pleaded guilty also to fraud and a conspiracy to distribute drugs. He was recently arrested for possessing cocaine he planned to distribute. Glasgow was also charged in 2021 with drug conspiracy along with an accomplice. 

Glasgow was arrested in 2018 Capital murder charges Breunia Jennings (23 years old), was killed in her car accident. Prosecutors claimed that she was hit in the head by someone driving in Glasgow. 

According to local media, however, the federal grand jury found insufficient evidence to continue the case against the minister. The murder charge was therefore dropped.

On Friday, the U.S. attorneys’ office stated that Glasgow could face up to 20 year imprisonment for the charges to which he pleaded guilty. He will also be subject to major fines and restitution for his crimes.

Paul Brown, an FBI agent, said in a statement: “Kenneth Glasgow’s actions not only endangered the community, but defrauded the American taxpayers. His guilty plea should help to dissuade others from following this same path.”
