California asked five economists from California to estimate the cost of discrimination in California’s black community. It was estimated that discriminatory housing policies from 1933 to 1977 cost the state $569 billion. That’s $223,329 each for every black resident. Washington Post reported.

But, this figure is only for housing discrimination. However, the group is still able to calculate the cost associated with a range of discriminatory policies. This means that the final amount of recommended reparations will be higher. Expect the final figure to be released in June along with the final report of the committee.

The meeting on Friday and Saturday are scheduled at the same time, which is a sign of increased effort by the committee. The previous meeting was held Jan. 27, 2022. There were many months between meetings for much of 2022.

Reparations task forces’ methods of arriving at figures have been challenged, particularly when a San Francisco task force arrived up with a figure that was $5 million per black resident.
