Biden Labor Sec Nominee Failed to Enforce Law Preventing Pedophiles From Working With Child Actors
On Tuesday, President Biden nominated Deputy Labor Secretary Julie Su to become the next Secretary of Labor, replacing former Labor Secretary Marty Walsh. Su, the former California labor secretary, was confirmed by the Senate in July of 2021 to serve as deputy secretary of labor in a party-line vote, according to The Hill.
In a 2021 report from the Daily Caller News Foundation, before Su was confirmed to her current position, it was revealed that Su failed to enforce California law aimed at preventing pedophilia in Hollywood. Su was the California labor commissioner between 2011 and 2018. She led the agency that enforced labor laws in California, including the Hollywood Child Protection Act. This law was signed by Jerry Brown in 2012, following a string of cases involving pedophiles in Hollywood.
The legislation established a system where all who worked with children actors, publicists and managers included, had to be issued a Child Performer Services Permit by the labor department. Although many did not obtain a permit, Su’s Department didn’t refer any violations to a prosecuting agency.
