Report: CIA Had Secret Role In Nelson Mandella’s 1960s Arrest

An old British newspaper confirmed long-held rumors that the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency was involved in Nelson Mandela’s 1962 arrest.

A Sunday Times newspaper report confirmed the retirement of a C.I.A. Donald Rickard, a C.I.A. agent, leaked information. This led to Mandela being held and imprisoned for nearly 28 years. According to The Times, John Irvin, a British filmmaker, interviewed Rickard in 2016. He explained to Rickard how he helped South Africa’s government arrest Mandela through a tip to C.I.A.
