Mom Welcomes Baby 17, Keeps Family Tradition of Giving All Kids Names Beginning With ‘C’

A mother of 17 and her husband feel blessed by their growing family. They continue to carry on a tradition that began with the letter “C” when they gave birth to their 17th child.

Patty Hernandez (41), is originally from Guatemala. Carlos Hernandez, her husband, is from El Salvador. They have made Charlotte, North Carolina their home and welcomed their children with open arms.

Patty says that the family’s unique tradition of having each child’s name start with the letter C began when Patty wanted to honor Carlos, her husband at 40, and Christ. The tradition remained unchanged after that.

Cannan Abraham Hernandez was their latest baby, weighing in at 7 pounds 6 ounces (approx. 3.34 kg).

Patty stated that everyone is excited to meet him and was anxious. “Now, we can just trust our Lord and we might be able to meet baby 18 in 2024.”

Three sets of twins were born to the couple: Carla and Caitlyn (12 years old), Calvin and Catherine (8 years), and Caleb (and Caroline) (5 years). The couple’s remaining children are Carlos Jr., Chris, Cristian and Celeste, Cristina.

Patty stated that sometimes we get confused when calling out names.

Carlos and Patty own God’s Cleaning Company and don’t receive any government support. Although they knew that they wanted to have a large family, they never imagined God would give them so many children.

The couple were shocked to learn that Patty was pregnant again in 2020 as their family grew to 15 children.

She said, “It was a surprise how God was blessing me with one more.” “Thanks to God, I had a really good pregnancy… it was the longest ever.”

Patty gave birth to baby number 16 on May 5, 2021 at 42 weeks of gestation. Carlos and her children are all very close and have a tight-knit relationship.

Patty stated, “They love one another.” “The best thing” [about] Being a mother to 16 children is a blessing. Because at the end, everything works out.

The Hernandez family rises at 5:05 a.m. in order to get ready for school. Patty and Carlos then head home to care for their seven children before they go to bed. Each child has their own chores. However, running a large household can lead to huge expenses. They spend more than $500 a week on food, diapers included.

Because of their strong Christian faith, caring for 17 children is a blessing and not a chore.

Patty stated, “We love God.” Teaching them the Bible is everything. They should be good people. That is the greatest bond we have.

Patty said that they are open to having more children.

“We would be delighted to receive all the children.” [God] We are blessed by your prayers!
