Legault Says No Foreign Meddling in Quebec Election, Amid China Allegations

Quebec Premier François Legault Says Last October’s provincial election was free of foreign interference.

Legault’s comments are in reaction to media reports—citing unnamed security sources and leaked intelligence—alleging China interfered in the 2019 and 2021 federal elections.

Thursday’s statements by the Quebec premier were made to reporters by stating that he was not aware of any foreign interference during the fall provincial election, which brought his party into power with a second successive majority mandate.

LegaultHe did not mention where he found the information, nor whether his government had done any checks.

Globe and Mail reported recently that China was involved in helping to ensure the victory of the Liberal minorities in the 2021 general elections. They also helped to defeat Conservative politicians who were considered unfriendly to Beijing.

The federal Conservatives, Bloc Québécois and NDP want a public inquiry into allegations of foreign interference in Canada’s democratic system—despite assurances by the country’s security agencies that China’s meddling attempts did not affect electoral integrity.
