Romney Left With Black Eye, ‘A Lot Of Stitches’ After Fall Knocked Him Unconscious
Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) says he fell down over the weekend and was knocked unconscious, resulting in “a lot of stitches.”
Ronmey, 73, said he “took a fall” when he was in Boston visiting his son and grandchildren. He appeared Monday on Capitol Hill with a black eye and stitches above his eye and over his lip.
The senator told reporters that after his fall, he was taken to a hospital and got stitches. “I had kind of a tough, tough weekend,” Romney joked. “I took a fall, knocked me unconscious, but I’m doing better. I went to CPAC — that was a problem.”
Romney was referring to the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) that was held in Orlando over the weekend. A moderate who twice voted to convict former President Donald Trump on impeachment charges, Romney is not popular at the conservative event.
Romney said he didn’t know how many stitches he got. “A lot of stitches. I don’t know how many. I asked the doctor how many stitches and she said, ‘I don’t know,’ but it’s all through my eyebrow and my lip.”
The senator was not invited to CPAC this year after his impeachment vote, and Matt Schlapp, chairman of the American Conservative Union which hosts the event, wrote on Twitter that he was disinvited last year. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was also not invited to CPAC, even though he voted to acquit Trump, though he did deliver a scathing speech criticizing the former president.
Last year, Schlapp announced that Romney was not invited to the event, later saying that he “would be afraid for his physical safety, people are so mad at him.”
At this year’s CPAC, former Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) took aim at Romney, who once had a secret Twitter account under the name Pierre Delecto. “My name is Jason Chaffetz, I’m from Utah and I am not Mitt Romney,” Chaffetz said. “If you’re looking for Pierre Delecto, you need to go down the hall, go left, and then just keep going left until — well, just keep going left. That’s where you’ll find him.”

Romney was a fierce critic of Trump and joined six other Republican senators who voted to convict him of inciting an insurrection on Jan. 6.
“After careful consideration of the respective counsels’ arguments, I have concluded that President Trump is guilty of the charge made by the House of Representatives,” Romney said in a statement. “He did this despite the obvious and well known threats of violence that day. President Trump also violated his oath of office by failing to protect the Capitol, the Vice President, and others in the Capitol. Each and every one of these conclusions compels me to support conviction.”
The failed 2012 GOP presidential candidate also said Trump “incited the insurrection against Congress by using the power of his office to summon his supporters to Washington on January 6th and urging them to march on the Capitol during the counting of electoral votes.”
“Each and every one of these conclusions compels me to support conviction,” Romney said.
