Sexual Assaults in the US Military Increased 13 Percent in FY 2021
After an annual report showing that sexual assault is increasing in the U.S. military, a House Democrat asked top enlisted military leaders how they dealt with it. Their answers were not satisfactory, she stated.
“No disrespect, but that’s an unsatisfying answer,” Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), spoke at the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies oversight hearing to James Honea, Master Chief Petty officer of the Navy.
Schultz asked this question as part of a discussion on how pay and housing issues are impacting morale, recruitment, and retention military personnel.
According to the FY 2021 Annual report on Sexual Assaults within the Military, reports of military sexual assaults increased 13 percent between Fiscal 2021 and 2021. It was made public in September 2022.
According to the report, 8.4 percent and 1.5% of active duty women reported having had unwanted sexual contact in FY 2021. The overall number of people who reported sexual assaults declined, despite an increase in the numbers of such reports.
