Volkswagen’s Scout to Build $2 Billion Plant in South Carolina
WASHINGTON/FRANKFURT—Volkswagen’s off-road brand Scout Motors said on Friday it would build a $2 billion manufacturing plant near Columbia, South Carolina, for trucks and SUVs.
Potentially, the investment will create at least 4,000 permanent jobs. Additionally, more than 200 Scout vehicles per year could be manufactured annually at this facility.
VW stated in May it was bringing back the Scout brand off-road in America. The new Scout pickups will be available with electric motors, and the sport-utility vehicle (SUV) option.
The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for mid-2023, and production is expected to start by 2026. Scout is an American company that Volkswagen Group owns and operates. It currently evaluates the possibility of outside investments.
“We’re reimagining Scout’s original ingenuity and electrifying its future,” Scott Keogh is the Chief Executive Officer of Scout.
Volkswagen abandoned the United States car market.
