NHL roundup: Knights edge Devils in shootout
Shea Theodore won the shootout’s fourth round, and Jonathan Marchessault was the winning goal scorer. He helped lead the Vegas Golden Knights (4-3 win over New Jersey Devils) Friday night in Las Vegas.
Adin Hill played in his 100th NHL season and made a record 47 saves. This allowed the Golden Knights to stop all four attempts at shootouts.
Marchessault scored the game’s first three-point goal. Jack Eichel contributed a goal as well as an assist, while Ivan Barbashev provided two assists to Vegas. Vegas improved its record to 8-1-2 in the last 11 games.
Dawson Mercer broke the franchise record by scoring a goal in his 8th consecutive game. Miles Wood and Jesper Bratt also scored goals for New Jersey. New Jersey had a 3-game winning streak. Akira Schmid had 24 saves.
Kraken 4, Blue Jackets 2
As Seattle beat Columbus, Jared McCann scored a goal for Seattle and Alex Wennberg assisted.
Brandon Tanev, Jordan Eberle, and Vince Dunn also scored for the Kraken. The Kraken have won at each of three of four stops in a trip that includes two games and concludes against Colorado on Sunday.
For Seattle, Philipp Grubauer saved 21 shots. Blue Jackets Patrik Layne and Adam Boqvist had an assist and a goal respectively. The Blue Jackets saw their streak of three games (2-0-1) come to an end. Elvis Merzlikins stopped 31 out of 34 shots.
Oilers 6, Jets 3.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored two goals and provided two assists in Edmonton’s win over Winnipeg.
Kailer Yamamoto, Leon Draisaitl, and Kailer Yamamoto had 2 goals each and 1 assist respectively. Connor McDavid’s five-game goal streak was ended with 3 assists. Edmonton’s fourth win in six was achieved by Stuart Skinner, who made 25 saves.
Connor Hellebuyck, Winnipeg’s goalkeeper, allowed four goals in 24 shots. He was then replaced by David Rittich (7 saves). Axel JonssonFjallby was credited with a goal as well as an assist. Brenden Dillon, Mark Scheifele and Mark Scheifele scored goals for the Jets. They have lost seven out of eight (8-1-1).
Hurricanes 6, Coyotes 1
Sebastian Aho scored two goals with an assist and Shayne Gostisbehere got a goal in his Carolina debut. The Hurricanes won in Tempe, Ariz.
Carolina lost its second consecutive game with two losses. Brent Burns had four assists, a record for him. Martin Necas, the Hurricanes’ goal scorer and assist producer produced two goals and Jaccob Slovin scored an assist. Antti Raanta had 17 saves.
Lawson Crouse’s 20th goal for the Coyotes was his 20th of the season. The Coyotes have now lost four of their five previous games. Karel Vejmelka stopped 36 shots.
Ducks 3, Canadiens 2
Midway through the third quarter, Mason McTavish broke a tie by scoring and Derek Grant scored two assists to win Anaheim its fourth victory in five games.
Jayson Megna, Jakob Silfverberg and John Gibson also scored for Ducks. John Gibson saved 26 games.
Jonathan Drouin scored one goal, one assist and Nick Suzuki had one. The Canadiens have now dropped their second straight game and all four of their previous games. Sam Montembeault stopped thirty shots.
