New Skeletal Analysis Shows Horseback Riding As Old As 5,000 Years
Central Analyse: Analysis of human remains dating back to 5,000 years ago Europe Strong evidence points to horseback riding. This helps explain the history of central European migration.
The remains of 200 bronze-aged people belonged to the Yamnaya, a group that was discovered in museums throughout Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland and Romania. These remains were examined for evidence of horseback riding. according to the Associated Press. The article stated that six distinct identifiers for horseback riding are identified by experts. These include wear marks on the hip sockets (thigh bone), and pelvis.
Original study published Science AdvancesIt was noted by, that horseback riding dates back to 3500 B.C. In modern Kazakhstan there is a little more convincing evidence from 2000 B.C. The Third Dynasty of Ur Mesopotamia
Five remains were found to be horseback riders. “There is earlier evidence for harnessing and milking of horses, but this is the earliest direct evidence so far for horseback riding,” Alan Outram is an archaeologist at the University of Exeter and an outside observer of this study.
Experts have also found evidence that horses were consuming milk from humans by analysing dental remains, similar to the way they examined bones.
Volker Heyd (University of Helsinki archaeologist, coauthor of the study) said that Yamnaya migrated westwards as far as Hungary, Hungary, and Mongolia within just a few generations. Additional context is provided by the findings from the study, which provide further insight into the relative rapid nature of migration.
“The spread of Indo European languages is linked to their movement, and they reshaped the genetic make-up of Europe,” Heyd stated.
The small number of bones showing clear signs that horses were used by the Yamnaya to combat is a sign that they did not ride on horseback. However, the AP article suggests that Yamnaya horses were used in subtler ways to context their migration. These included better communication with tribes, forming alliances, managing cattle and managing their economy.
