DC mayor Muriel Bowser knocks congressional ‘meddling’ on crime bill
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) warned about the potential ramifications for congressional elections “meddling” The Republican-backed plan was followed by overturn a city crime bill.

“I will never say that we want the Congress meddling in the affairs of the District of Columbia,” Bowser told Meet the Press now. “That’s a slippery slope, again, that we endure not just with bills like this. We have a lot of issues to overcome with limited home rule.”
Bowser had previously vetoed a city crime bill. This legislation would have reduced mandatory minimums as well as other punishments for criminal conduct, but it was overruled by the city council. The House approved a Republican-backed bill last week in order to repeal the law.
The Home Rule Act allows Washington, D.C. to function as an independent municipality, its laws being subject to approval by Congress. Bowser is a long-time advocate for statehood.
“Unfortunately, we live with the indignity of limited home rule in this in the District of Columbia. We’re taxpaying Americans. We’re in the shadow of the Capitol, but we don’t have two senators. We don’t have a vote. And we’ve been working for decades to change that. And until we become a state, we live with this process,” Bowser also said so.
