First major Democrat enters Louisiana governor’s race
FOrmer Louisiana Transportation Secretary Shawn Wilson is the first major Democrat who jumped into this office Louisiana’s The 2023 race for the gubernatorial seat, currently dominated by Republican candidates.
Wilson led the Department of Transportation and Development in Washington for seven years before stepping down as governor last week. Incumbent Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) cannot be used in conjunction with another term because it is not term-limited.

“Louisiana needs a governor who will build bridges, not burn them,” Wilson declared An announcement video. “I’m Shawn Wilson, that’s the kind of leader that I’ve been, and that is exactly the kind of governor that I promise to be.”
Trump won the Bayou State easily in 2020, which shows the difficulty Democrats face in state elections. Edwards was also blocked from running for a second term.
Pastor and Special Educator Daniel is the other Democrat on this field “Danny” Cole. There were other Democrats that had been speculated to run for office, like East Baton Rouge District attorney Hillar Moore III or Louisiana Democratic Party chairwoman Katie Bernhardt. But they chose to not.
