Green groups sue to block Gulf of Mexico oil and gas lease sale
EThe lawsuits were brought against nvironmental group Biden administration Monday, in an effort to block three of the offshore vessels oil And gas Lease sales made by Democrats’ Inflation Reduction Act
A lawsuit was filed by Gulf of Mexico-based environmental groups as well as other notable environmental organizations, such the Sierra Club. It asks for a federal court’s to throw out the Interior Department’s environmental analysis that was performed in connection with the lease sale.
WHAT’S IN STORE FOR OIL AND GAS LEASING THIS YEAR
The plaintiff groups claimed that the analysis did not meet the legal requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act, and therefore should be stopped.
“Selling off more of our lands and waters to the fossil fuel industry is the last thing we should do at a time when we need to be rapidly transitioning away from oil and gas to meet our nation’s climate goals and create a livable planet for all,” Athan Manuel is the director of Sierra Club’s Lands Protection Program.
Inflation Reduction Act is a bill that the Democrats passed to reduce inflation. It includes green energy spending and healthcare spending. included orders Interior must execute the three leases it has canceled in May 2022. Two of these are located in Gulf of Mexico.
