D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson sent a letter On Monday, Vice President Kamala Harris (the president of the Senate) announced that he would withdraw the Revised Criminal Code Act, which was under congressional scrutiny, from consideration.

“Withdrawal enables the Council to work on the measure in light of Congressional comments, and to re-transmit it later,” He wrote.

Mendelson’s letters aside, Senator Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D–NY) stated to reporters that the upper chamber plans to vote despite Mendelson’s words. “They have a right to bring it up but there’ll be a vote on Wednesday,” He stated, according to NBC News.

While the reforms are credited with improving an obsolete system, critics felt it was encouraging wrongdoing through lowering penalties for specific crimes.

Bowser proposed targeted alterations To the amended code. This includes increasing penalties for carjackings or gun crime and restoring maximum penalties. It also delays its implementation up to 2027.
