Newsom vacations in Baja while California is under emergency weather conditions

California Governor Gavin Newsom recently went to Baja Mexico on a weekend vacation. This has led to some questioning his leadership, as Californians are often subject to severe weather.

According to reports, Gavin Newsom (D.Calif.), took an out-of-state trip at a time in which many parts of California were being severely affected by the recent storms. Thirteen counties are now in the state of emergency, according to Newsom’s office. “state of emergency.” Many people living in California’s mountain regions are without food or water because of record-breaking snowfall, according to reports.

Although it isn’t known what drove the governor to choose this vacation time, reports indicate that he left Baja immediately after visiting the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Powerplant in San Luis Obispo.

Kevin Kiley (Republican House Representative, California) shared his disappointment with Newsom’s mistimed vacation on Twitter.

“Californians are trapped in their homes without power. More storms are on the way. And Governor Newsom has just left the state for ‘personal travel,'” Kiley said.

Newsom was not in the country so Kiley called Eleni Kounalakis, Acting Governor (D-Calif.). “to immediately seek a Major Disaster Declaration from the President.”   

A few members of the mainstream press took to Twitter to express their disappointment at Newsom’s withdrawal from Mexico.

“May not have been the best timing for Newsom to go out of state on personal travel,” Emily Hoeven (San Francisco Chronicle columnist) tweeted this.

“[Newsom] returned to the state on Sunday, meeting with emergency personnel at the State Operations Center and receiving a briefing on current conditions,” Representatives from Governor’s offices said.
