What has happened?This is a Washington, D.C., Police Officer who narrowly saved a woman on Wednesday thwarted An attempted carjacking attempt at Union Station where many left-wing activists were protesting Criminology and carjacking are being favored by significantly reduced punishments.
“I come out of Union Station and walk into an attempt[ed] car robbery,” Andrew Leyden, a freelance journalist wrote about the incident in a Twitter posting that also included a clip. “Delivery driver left car running and guy jumped in. Another person saw it and called over cop. Robber fled off, running past the D.C. Criminal Reform protest outside (seriously).”
Context: Wednesday’s vote in the U.S. Senate on a controversial measure was anticipated. “crime reform” D.C.’s city council adopted the following measures. In 2022, the criminal code reforms were approved. They would lower sentencing guidelines in crimes like carjacking and burglary as well as illegal gun ownership. The Republican-led House voted in February to overturn the law, and President Joe Biden last week spoke out against D.C.’s bill as well.
“I don’t support some of the changes D.C. Council put forward over the mayor’s objections—such as lowering penalties for carjackings,” Biden tweeted his thoughts. “If the Senate votes to overturn what D.C. Council did—I’ll sign it.”
Biden’s remarks prompted the chair of the council to announce that the city is now withdrawing The measure.
