No forced resignation
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), can expect a lot from state lawmakers during their next legislative session. His most important contribution to his political future does not have to do with policies.
DeSantis is now the main 2024 Republican White House competitor to former Donald TrumpDeSantis, however, has not yet joined the fray as have the former governors of South Carolina. Nikki Haley “anti-woke” biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.
Recent actions by DeSantis point to a run for the presidency in 2024. This includes the publication a new book that focuses on his work over four-plus decades as governor to crush “wokeism” Florida. The speech, which was delivered March 4, at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library (Southern California), is widely considered to be an audition by conservatives before a 2024 bid.
DeSantis needs to clear a technical hurdle before anything can happen. Florida’s “resign to run” If he runs for the presidency, he would have to resign from his role as governor. Sunshine State law, which has been in force for many years, requires federal candidates to have political stakes. Candidates for federal office must resign their current offices to get a spot on the next ballot.
Florida is just one of a few states that have a “resign to run” The law is there. At least for the moment. The state legislature is dominated by Republicans. They could repeal the election law with ease, and they seem to be able to do so.
This effect has already been achieved by a state House bill. This is one of many measures that DeSantis will likely be able to consider in the legislative session lasting two months. Many of these could help him improve his conservative credentials for the 2024 election.
The legislature will be considering bills in the next two months to, among other things.
