Boston Democrat Mayor Sued For Allegedly Discriminating Against White Restaurant Owners
Boston Democrat Mayor Michelle Wu A group of white restaurant owners accused him of racial discrimination. They claim they were targeted for city taxes partly because of their ethnic heritage.
Wu and the city were charged a $7500 fee for outdoor dining. Only for the purpose of determining eligibility to establishes in their locality. The plaintiffs are seeking $500,000 for compensatory damages and $1 Million in punitive damage.
“It is commonly known that the traditional owner of a restaurant in the North End of Boston is a white male of Italian descent, and the North End is generally regarded (as) the last true ethnic Boston Italian neighborhood,” The group of restaurant owners filed a Tuesday legal document .
“The Plaintiffs had a right to be treated the same as other restaurants in the City who were granted outdoor dining and not singled out to pay fees … to have outdoor dining because of their sex or national origin/ethnicity as appears in this case,” The lawsuit continues.
Wu is being sued by Jorge Mendoza Iturralde (Carla Gomes), Jason Silvestri, Kim Silvestri and Patrick Mendoza. All of them own restaurants in Boston’s North End. In October, a judge rejected a similar claim by the group after they claimed that the fees were illegal.
Wu claimed the fees were needed to reduce traffic congestion and garbage disposal in historic neighborhoods, which was the only one in the city that received the additional fees. Wu apologized for the harsh criticism and created a way for some establishments to be exempt from the fees.
“I won’t comment on ongoing litigation that the city is involved in, but I will say that we stand fully behind decisions that are to ensure residents can live in their neighborhoods with the full range of ease of access and safety and opportunity,” Wu said the following to reporters when he was asked about his suit.
Jorge Mendoza Iturralde was one of the people involved in the suit. The attempt was unsuccessful Last year, Wu’s restaurant fee protest led to Wu running for a seat as a council member. Wu ran on a platform supporting law enforcement and small businesses as well as maintaining the city’s historic monuments.
“The city of Boston is failing the people and I feel I have to do something about it,” He said this when he announced his campaign. “I will be a vocal challenge to Mayor Wu.”
