Senators were contacted by the National Women’s Law Center and People for the American Way. “further examine” Delaney’s record. Delaney was a representative of the prestigious St. Paul’s School, New Hampshire. He filed a successful motion for the removal of an anonymous minor victim to sexual assault.
“With continued efforts in the courts to narrow and overturn fundamental and civil rights, we must ensure only nominees who understand the impact of the law on and the need to protect the rights of women, girls, people of color, LGBTQI+ people, pregnant and parenting individuals, and other communities marginalized in our society are confirmed to the federal bench,” The groups send the following letter to the first reported by Politico. “At a time when survivors are shamed for exercising their civil rights to be free from sex discrimination in education, it is essential that we call out the actions of those in power who seek to minimize the trauma, needs, and lived experiences of survivors.”
Dick Durbin, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee (D., Ill.), indicated that the Senate would vote on Delaney within the next week. The letter highlights the difficult circumstances Democrats face as advocates for victims of sexual assault. Chessy Prout, the victim, and her family have been vocal opponents to Delaney’s nomination.
“Delaney used the ‘totality of his career,’ his accumulated knowledge of victim trauma, and weaponized that knowledge and experience to intimidate a minor victim of sexual assault into silence,” Alex Prout, father of Chessy Prout made Saturday’s statement. “This does not qualify him to be a federal judge.”
Maggie Hassan (D.), and Jeanne Shaheen, both New Hampshire senators, led the charge to confirm him. They have praised his record on numerous occasions. With two Democratic absents, Feinstein suffering from shingles and Sen. John Fetterman (Penn.), Delaney’s nomination is far from certain. Delaney is currently in a hospital with depression. His nomination is not certain.
