Joe Manchin Slams Ford For Partnering With Chinese Company To Build Batteries: I’m ‘Totally Opposed’
Senator Joe Manchin (D.W.Va.) attacked Ford Friday for partnering Chinese battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited. (CATL), to make batteries for its electric cars. He claimed that he was not responsible for the partnership. “totally opposed” The Inflation Reduction Act provides subsidies for electric vehicles to help the U.S. taxpayer.
Chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Manchin has advocated for increasing domestic production of batteries used in electric cars. However, he insists that he does not want taxpayer money to go to a Chinese company.
“I’ll be damned if I’m going to give them $900 out of $7,500, to let it go to China for basically a product we started,” Manchin. “You’re telling me we don’t have the smart people and the technology, and we can’t get up to speed quick enough? That doesn’t make sense.”
According to Reuters, a Ford spokesperson replied by saying: “Making these batteries here at home is much better than continuing to rely exclusively on foreign imports, like other auto companies do.”

The news generated criticisms and threats of congressional investigation into the company for its relationship with communist China.

According to The Daily Wire, a source close to the House Republican leadership said: “The closer Ford gets to the Chinese communists the closer we’re going to look at their business.”

One Michigan Republican strategist indicated that GOP lawmakers need to be ready to deny Ford tax incentives due to the negative effects that doing business in communist China will have on the state.
“Ford is seeking close to a billion dollars in tax incentives from the State of Michigan,” The strategist stated. “That’s a billion dollars that will directly benefit the Chinese Communist Party. Republican lawmakers in Michigan should understand that this is an issue that will get national attention.”
