According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, a 3-year-old Texas girl accidentally shot and killed her 4-year old sister.
According to the sheriff, the incident was unintentional and unfortunate. However, it could have been prevented with proper education and parental guidance.
Gonzales reported that Gonzales and five of their friends, two children and two adults, were enjoying a Sunday night in Houston, Texas.
Unbeknownst of the rest of his family, the 3-year old managed to grab a loaded semiautomatic pistol.
Both parents claimed that their daughters believed that the other parent was looking after them.
The family said that they heard a loud gunshot. They eventually found their 4-year old daughter unconscious and lying on her stomach.
Around 7:30 p.m. Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO deputies received the terrible call about the juvenile.
They arrived at the scene to find the child had been tragically declared dead.
“It just seems like another tragic story of another child gaining access to a firearm and hurting someone else,” Gonzales said.
Gonzales stated that the investigation was ongoing and that it is very likely that someone will be charged with failing to secure their weapon responsibly.
This is the latest instance of a child using an unsecure firearm to intentionally or accidentally take another person’s life.
A 6-year-old boy from Virginia decided to take a gun to school to shoot his teacher. The teacher who was injured is still in recovery.
Everytown Research & Policy, which compiled the data, also estimated that there were at most 2,070 unintentional shots by children younger than 18 between 2015-2020. They are known for their support of education regarding gun control and strong opposition to gun violence.
“In no other similarly large or wealthy country are firearms deaths in the top four causes of mortality let alone the number one cause of death among children,” Last year, a Kaiser Family Foundation representative was posted.
The American Academy of Pediatrics strongly recommends that gun owners keep firearms locked and unloaded. Ammunition should be kept in a separate safe.
