NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation advances strategy to house homeless patients
THe New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation announced plans to hire an external organization to support the city’s health and hospitals. Homeless Patients discover Housing. This would reduce the number of emergency room visits.
The finance committee Hospitals and Health Monday’s Board of Directors vote approved a contract for Coordinated Behavioral Care. The contract must be approved by the full board later in the month. Coordinated Behavioral Care (or Coordinated Behavioral Care) is a nonprofit consortium of behavioral health agencies.

According to the contract, the consortium will assist patients in finding and applying for apartments within their budget. They will be provided with furniture and other supplies when they move in, and can accompany them to viewings. The group will house approximately 400 people per year, and help with 600 more on a daily basis. But this is only a fraction the almost 50,000 homeless individuals who were in need of assistance last year. According To Politico.
Health and Hospitals already have a housing initiative. They house 500 homeless people each year, but the nine month process is typically handled by social workers. The new contract, if approved, would last for four years. It would also expand the Housing for Health initiative. The contract is part the Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams Last year’s housing blueprint revealed.

Patients experiencing homelessness visit emergency rooms three times more frequently than those with housing. According to a health system analysis, they also spend three times as much time in hospital.
Another study revealed that patients who receive housing through this program experienced a decrease in emergency department visits as well as a reduction of hospitalizations within the first year.
