Texas Announces Takeover Of Failing Big City School District

After allegations of misconduct and low academic scores, Texas officials announced Wednesday that they would be taking over the eighth largest school district in Texas.

According According to The Associated Press Mike Morath (Texas Commissioner of Education) announced that officials will officially take over the Houston Independent Schools District (HISD).

Morath cited Texas law that requires Texas officials to assume control, and claimed it was the best way to get the district on its feet. According The Houston Chronicle

“Even with recent improvements and despite good intentions from many, Houston ISD as a system continues to allow chronically low achievement in multiple schools,” Morath added. “State intervention is necessary in several years in an attempt to shore up support for students in those schools.”

Morath sent a notice to the Houston ISD Board of Trustees, alerting them of the takeover. KPRC 2 News reported.

“The goal here is to let what is great about Houston continue to be great, but where there are places where students have for far too long gone without the sort of structure of support that they need,” Morath said that Morath was speaking to KPRC 2 News. “The system of Houston ISD seems to allow campuses to go many, many years without seeing performance.”

After Wheatley High School received seven consecutive unacceptable ratings, officials began to work on the HISD takeover in 2019. Several other schools in the district also received D or F evaluations.

The Houston Chronicle reported that the state law required schools to close down or set up a board made up of managers to replace existing board members due to failing grades.

A lawsuit was filed against the state by officials from the district, but the Texas Supreme Court rejected the case because of new education laws passed in Texas. These laws gave the state authority to take control.

Officials from the Texas Education Agency will reportedly appoint two superintendents and a board to manage the district through the June end.
