Judge Protecting Raphael Warnock’s Old Charity From Legal Trouble Has Warnock Himself To Thank for Her Job
Federal judge Raphael Warnock was once the leader of the Georgia voter registration group. Warnock led the charge for her nomination by the Biden administration for the lifetime judicial post.
In December 2022, District Judge Victoria Calvert blocked Georgia’s attempts to accuse the New Georgia Project of illegally aiding Democrat Stacey Abrams in her failed 2018 gubernatorial election campaign. Warnock was the group’s chairman. Warnock was the one who did it. It is strongly recommended President Joe Biden will nominate Calvert for the District Court of Northern Georgia, September 2021. The Senate Confirmed Calvert promoted to the post of lifetime in March 2022.
Calvert’s move is being called an “attempt to circumvent the rule of law” That “serves only to undermine transparency in our elections,” Georgia attorney general Chris Carr (R.), appealed to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, March 8, demanding that the judge’s decision be reversed so he could resume enforcement proceedings against group.
“New Georgia Project spent millions of dollars in express political advocacy, fought state investigators for years to avoid disclosing any information, and then rushed to federal court to stop this civil proceeding entirely,” Carr stated in a Statement. “We are filing this appeal to ensure that our state statute is upheld and Georgia’s ongoing proceeding is protected.”
Calvert’s intervention into the case against the charity she once ran with her chief benefactor in Senate raises serious concerns about conflicts of interests. This also happens as Georgia’s secretary to state investigates the New Georgia Project. “financial irregularities” These are the following Several Washington Free Beacon Reports Former New Georgia Project executives are accused of financial mismanagement.
The Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission started their legal battle against New Georgia Project in September 2019. The investigation led to subpoenas being issued by the state against the charity. They revealed that it had not disclosed over $4.2 million in donations and $3.2 million in expenses during 2018 elections.
In August 2022, Carr’s office received the case. The commission ruled that New Georgia Project failed to report political expenditures and likely violated state law. New Georgia Project responded to the allegations by appealing to the District Court of Northern Georgia. They claimed that they were not required to disclose their financial activities to elect Abrams as it had spent more money on non-election related activities.
Calvert ultimately ruled in favour of New Georgia Project, December 2022. Their motion to enjoin Georgia authorities enforcing state election finance law was granted partly because the charity had violated its free speech rights.
