Ted Cruz turns up the heat on anti-gas stoves research groups tied to Biden’s proposed ban

EXCLUSIVE Sen. Ted Cruz (Republican from Texas) is asking a left-wing environmental group as well as a consumer advocacy organisation for information in relation to a payment of hundreds of thousands of dollars for research on anti-gas stoves. This payment is tied to the Biden administration’s proposed crackdown.

A $375,000 grant was earmarked in 2021 for this purpose. “gas stoves and indoor air quality,” Tax forms reveal that the Climate Imperative Foundation funded an Oct. 4, 2022 article linking gas stoves and childhood asthma. Cruz now wants answers from CIF and Consumer Reports. The article was written by a product tester and was cited separately by Richard Trumka Jr. of the Consumer Product Safety Commission in an October 25 memo. This memo proposed banning gas stoves. According to Thursday letters, Cruz obtained the following information. Washington Examiner.

“CPSC’s blind reliance on Consumer Reports’ gas stove pieces to support potential rulemaking is troubling,” Cruz wrote in his letters. “It suggests that activist organizations may be coordinating with the Biden administration to eliminate fossil fuel use without authorization from Congress.”

Republicans continue to examine the Biden administration’s proposals to limit gas stoves to combat climate change. Trumka claimed that the CPSC was currently considering a ban gas stoves. Bloomberg News reported. Records show that the Energy Department is taking public comment until April 3, in order to draft a rule that would limit gas stove use in homes across the United States.

Trumka’s October memo referenced a Jan. 13 article entitled “Pros and Cons of Induction Cooktops and Ranges,” Which in turn links to an article titled Jan. 12, “Induction Cooktops and Ranges Are So Good You May Not Miss Your Gas Appliance.” The Jan. 12 article links to the Oct. 4, 2022 CIF-backed report. “Is Your Gas Range a Health Risk?”

Trumka’s memo also cited April 2022 “Emissions in the Kitchen” New York University Law School’s Institute for Public Integrity compiled a report detailing the alleged allegations. “dangers of gas stove emissions.” CIF grants $230,000 to law school in 2021 “US buildings initiative,” Tax forms are shown.

Cruz sent letters to Consumer Reports and CIF asking whether any of its employees had ever discussed gas stoves, including with the CPSC or White House. CIF lists Wang Yi as an advisor and also serves China’s legislature. Yi was the Foreign Ministry of the People’s Republic of China (a role that oversees the country’s foreign affairs) from 2013 to 2022.

“What makes all this even more concerning is CIF’s reported close ties to the Chinese communist government,” Cruz wrote the following letter to CIF.

The senator would like to know if CIF has any other information about how its $375,000 grant was used, and if Consumer Reports received additional CIF funding. He listed several grant questions for the green energy group. These include whether the CIF reviewed Consumer Reports research or testing and whether or not it signed off on publication of the October report.

Cruz’s letter addressed CIF also focused on the U.S. Public Interest Research Group Education Fund’s $300,000.000 grant for 2021, which was requested by Cruz. “ending our reliance on fossil fuels.”

Trumka stated this during a December 2022 webinar the group hosted. “we need to be talking about regulating gas stoves, whether that is drastically improving emissions or banning gas stoves entirely. And I think we ought to keep that possibility of a ban in mind as we follow along because it’s a powerful tool in our toolbox [and] it’s a real possibility,” According to Cruz.

The Republican also requested documents regarding CIF’s more than $2 million grants to Rocky Mountain Institute between 2020 and 2021. This green energy group funded a December 2022 research linking gas stoves and childhood asthma. The study was promoted by Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm on Twitter in January.

“We can and must FIX this,” tweeted Granholm. “Through ‘ Inflation Reduction Act, Americans will have greater access to Electric and Induction Cooktops: Keeps pollution out of the home. Cooks food faster. Helps families save money.”

Cruz’s Thursday letters came after he asked Trumka, Chairman of CPSC Alexander Hoehn–Saric, to preserve records related the possible regulation of gas stoves.

A separate letter was sent by the senator on Wednesday to request records from RewiringAmerica, a nonprofit organization that now counts Stacey Abrams (failed Democratic gubernatorial hopeful) as senior counsel. It is linked to Granholm’s December research linking gas stoves to childhood Asthma. The study was co-authored by Talor Gruenwald (Rewiring America’s research partner).
