White House Is ‘Encouraging’ China–Ukraine Talks
Biden’s administration welcomes a possible meeting between Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian President, and Xi Jinping, Chinese communist leader.
According to John Kirby (National Security Council Coordinator, Strategic Communications), the White House would promote such an arrangement in order for the Chinese communist leadership to better understand the needs the Ukrainian people.
“We think it would be a very good thing if the two of them talked,” Kirby spoke during a March 16th press conference.
“We think it’s really important for the Chinese to get the Ukrainian perspective and not just Mr. Putin’s.”
Kirby also stated that the White House was a “strange place”. “encouraging” Such a meeting is for “quite some time” He stated that the administration will be cautious about any attempt by China, to broker a peaceful settlement without first consulting with Ukraine.
“We would certainly be concerned by any proposals coming out of [China] that would be one-sided and reflect only the Russian perspective,” Kirby said.
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP), which rules China as a single-party state, is attempting to position itself as a mediator, although—to date—the regime has openly supported Russia’s attempted conquest and hasn’t held any substantive talks with Ukrainian officials.
The regime issued a 12-point position document in February. This paper was promoted as “a new way to get ahead.” “peace plan,” The document, however, largely reiterated Russian propaganda and attributed the war on America and NATO.
Zelenskyy stated, for his part that Russian troops will need to leave Ukraine because of the paper’s emphasis upon national sovereignty.
“What they are saying looks like respect for territorial integrity,” Zelenskyy commented on the CCP document. “It doesn’t mention the country, but it’s our territorial integrity that has been breached.
“Territorial integrity means the withdrawal of Russian troops. If it’s not there it means that it is not OK with the US.”
Likewise, Kirby said that the CCP’s push for a ceasefire without Russian withdrawal would serve only to help Russia re-arm and train its troops for another offensive later on.
“While [ceasefire] This sounds quite reasonable and it is a good thing. A ceasefire right now would basically be ratifying Russia’s conquests.” Kirby said. “It would recognize Russia’s gains as well as all its efforts to seize territory from a neighboring country.
“If a peace is going to be enduring, if it’s going to be a just peace, if it’s going to be sustainable, it can’t be one-sided. It has to absolutely include and be informed by Ukrainian perspectives and Ukrainian decisions.”
