Biden under fire from Democrats for moderating approach ahead of 2024 contest

AAs President Joe Biden prepares for his reelection bid in 2024, he is using old tactics: moving toward the middle to win over centrists as well as some Republicans to secure the White House for a second term.

Biden has been siding closely with conservatives over the past weeks on key issues like crime, oil, and immigration. Although the White House claims that those moves are not part of a wider reelection strategy the shift does not sit well with many of his party members who are more liberal.

“I think the devil is in the details, and we will see what happens,” Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) told Politico. “But has he made decisions that progressives disagree with? Absolutely. We will see what comes up in the next year.”

Biden brokered with Democrats when he announced that he would sign a GOP-led law to repeal the recently rewritten Washington, D.C. criminal code, which lowers penalties for certain crimes. Biden changed his mind and stated that he would not veto this bill.

Many House Democrats were furious at Biden’s decision and accused him of abandoning previous promises to protect the district’s self governance.

“This ain’t it. DC has a right to govern itself, like any other state or municipality. If the President supports DC statehood, he should govern like it,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) tweeted. “Plenty of places pass laws the President may disagree with. He should respect the people’s gov of DC just as he does elsewhere.”

Biden broke once more with his party when he announced earlier this week that he would approve the Willow Project in Alaska, an $8 billion project to extract 600,000,000 barrels of oil from federal land. Biden broke with his party’s pledges to stop drilling on federal land during the campaign trail in 2020, prompting widespread criticism.

“Youth voter turnout was at its highest in 2020 & young folks supported him because of commitments such as ‘no more drilling on federal land,'” Rep. Maxwell Frost (R.FL), the first Gen Z member of Congress, tweeted this Week. “That commitment has been broken.”

Democrats are also worried that Biden might be moving to the right on key subjects like immigration. This comes after it was reported that Biden could revive an Obama-era immigration policy which detained illegally crossed migrants and their families. Biden lifted the detention policy shortly after taking office in 2021, but now, officials are looking at ways to reinstate some of its provisions — stoking anger from Democrats who say Biden has been mum on his plans.

“The lack of communication on immigration-related policy decisions is an insult,” Sen. Bob Menendez (D.N.J.), who is heavily involved at Congress in immigration reform, stated Axios. “It would be like making civil rights legislative ideas and thoughts without checking with the Congressional Black Caucus.”

According to the White House, Biden’s recent actions are not campaign-related but simply coincidental timing. Asides pointed out previous instances where Biden had sided with liberals on key issues during the 2020 campaign. They argued that his actions were normal.

Biden has yet to announce his reelection campaign. However, the president is expected to make a decision in coming weeks.
