Three days of strike action by the United Teachers of Los Angeles are planned for next week. This is in an effort transform city schools into a “green” social services hub. Los Angeles chapter of Democratic Socialists of America identified the teachers’ plan in its “Green New Deal for L.A. Public Schools” The group has made it their priority agenda item for this year. But buried beneath the teachers’ sundry progressive demands is a 20 percent salary hike over two years for Los Angeles teachers, who on average make $159,000 per year.
Teachers’ unions are using supposedly progressive and high-minded causes to win professional victories in the socialist-backed strike. Randi Weingarten, the president of American Federation of Teachers, advocated for equity and opposed the closing of school by union-backed teachers during the pandemic. President of the National Education Association Randi Weingarten stated that the union would lobby for transgender issues, gun control, and abortion in addition to its fight against charter schools last summer. To gain support from other powerful political organizations, the California teachers’ union is lobbying for gun control, flavored tobacco bans and LGBT issues.
The teachers’ union lifted elements of the DSA’s Green New Deal for schools, such as demands for free public transportation for students, “climate literacy” Courses taught through a “racial justice lens,” Campus parks and more school solar panels. The Teachers’ Platform, titled “Beyond Recovery,” Also, the union wants city rent controls, taxpayer funded parental leave, subsidized housing for unused school property, smaller classrooms and a crackdown against charter schools. Administrators are also being asked by the union to lobby the federal government for permanent COVID-19 funding and to allow the state to increase its cash flow.
According to AOL, Los Angeles public school teachers average $159,000 annually, including benefits. Washington Free Beacon Analysis of Transparent California district salaries. It is nearly twice the city’s $67,500 average salary. The strike would shut schools for three days in the state’s largest district, where kids are still reeling from learning losses and behavioral problems incurred during California’s longest-in-the-nation closures. It would affect 420,000 students.

Alberto Carvalho, the district superintendent, said that teachers’ union is co-coordinating their strike with the SEIU local chapter for low-wage school workers. The union has refused to enter into normal negotiations and won’t compromise on its demands. On Wednesday, he held a press conference to pledge to do all he could to prevent the strike. The Los Angeles Democratic Socialists of America joined the two unions to cheer him on.
“Socialists support public school workers!” Los Angeles DSA chapter tweets
The teacher socialist backers who supported the pay hike seem to have reacted against the fact that this massive increase in wages seems to be counter-intuitive. “believe that working people should run both the economy and society … to meet human needs, not to make profits for a few.”
Los Angeles schools saw a massive exodus and the unions and their socialist allies are now engaging in antics. About 20,000 students quit school or moved on to better schools in order to avoid forced remote learning. Los Angeles school officials foresee more dwindling to come—and a corresponding hit to their budgets. According to projections, enrollment will shrink by almost 30% by 2030.
