New York man charged with plotting against police officers and threats of killing the mayor at local St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
According to the Justice Department, Ridon Kola, Yonkers, New York was arrested and is currently facing federal charges.
“That’s usually what terrorists want to do,” Mayor Mike Spano said. “They want to terrorize your mind, terrorize your thoughts and make you afraid.”
Multi-agency investigations, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the New York Police Department(NYPD), revealed threats made over social media by Kola.
“I will crucify Yonkers cops and their bosses all along McLean ave,” In a direct message to Yonkers Police, the 32-yearold stated. “It will be a horror scene. Allahu Ekberr.”
Kola, who lives close to the parade route, was previously interrogated by law enforcement. Kola was taken into custody by members of the FBI/NYPD Joint Terrorism Task Force following his threats.
Local residents were relieved that he was stopped.
“It is scary, but it’s good to know that they’ve been caught,” Maria Oriol, a Yonkers resident, said. “There’s always someone out there trying to do something.”
Kola had also called Sayfullo Saipov “his brother” and had previously praised Sayfullo Saipov. Saipov was convicted of using a truck to hit and kill eight people, injuring many others in a terror attack in Manhattan’s West Side. He is now serving a lifetime sentence in prison.
“Most of the time, these things are unfounded,” The mayor stated. “Most of the time, these things don’t pan out, but we have to be vigilant and we have to be 100 percent.”
Yonkers’ mayor assured the community that sufficient law enforcement will be present during Saturday’s parade and along the entire route. Officers will be dressed in plain and uniform clothes to ensure safety for all.
