House Democrat says he’s considering Mayorkas impeachment over border wall construction

A House Democrat Alejandro Mayorkas suggested that he might vote for impeaching Homeland Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. GOP lawmakers have a potential path to accusing the Biden administration official.

Rep. Juan Vargas (D. CA) indicated an interest in joining his Republican counterparts to impeach Mayorkas. However, this was for reasons that are different from what GOP lawmakers are currently trying. Vargas stated that he would be willing to vote to impeach DHS secretary for the construction of San Diego’s border walls, which Mayorkas has previously pledged to stop.

“[Mayorkas] told us that he would help us, and he hasn’t done it,” Vargas spoke to reporters Friday. “He betrayed us.”

Vargas refers to the Friendship Park border wall project, which is currently underway between San Diego, Tijuana and Mexico. Friendship Park was once a place where families could meet at the border, with a gate between them. However, the area has been closed off for many years.

Now, Border Patrol agents say the gates are deteriorating and should be replaced with new walls — a decision Vargas and other local Democratic officials have pushed back against. Construction of the new border wall is expected to be complete in six months. It was reported that construction began some weeks ago.

Vargas accused Mayorkas, pointing out that the Homeland secretary had promised to stop the construction once he was in the area.

Since taking control of lower chamber in January, the House Republicans have been insistent on impeaching Mayorkas. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R. CA), one of the GOP leaders, has long pledged to open impeachment investigations into DHS Secretary if he does not resign. He was targeted for his handling on the southern border.

Rep. Pat Fallon (R.TX), introduced three articles against Mayoraks in Jan. He accused Mayorkas, allegedly, of undermining law enforcement activities on the southern border. Fallon’s impeachment inquiry includes three articles against Mayorkas. They include the charges of engaging a pattern in conduct “incompatible with his duties,” Giving false and misleading testimony to Congress “knowingly” slandering Border Patrol agents.

Rep. Andy Biggs (R.AZ) presented his own articles for impeachment of Mayorkas “the systematic destruction of the geographical integrity of the United States of America.”

The House Judiciary Committee has been referred to the articles of impeachment. It is not clear when or if they will be reviewed by the whole House. If Republicans impeach Mayorkas it is unlikely that he will be convicted in the Democratic Senate.

Mayorkas said that he has no plans to leave his position. The DHS noted that the allegations used to file an impeachment inquiry are not consistent with the constitutional standard of high crime and misdemeanors.

“Secretary Mayorkas is proud to advance the noble mission of this Department, support its extraordinary workforce, and serve the American people,” According to a spokesperson from DHS, the Washington Examiner January “The Department will continue our work to enforce our laws and secure our border, while building a safe, orderly, and humane immigration system. Members of Congress can do better than point the finger at someone else; they should come to the table and work on solutions for our broken system and outdated laws, which they have not updated in over 40 years.”
