‘Persecution, Not Prosecution’–Ramaswamy Calls on DeSantis and Haley to Join Him in Condemning Trump Indictment
Commentary
On March 18, Vivek Ramaswamy, an insurgent candidate for president, called on his fellow candidates, Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis, to join him in condemning the potential indictment of Donald Trump by Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg in the Stormy Daniels affair. During the Vision ’24 National Conservative Forum at the Charleston Area Convention Center, Ramaswamy referred to the possible action as “persecution, not prosecution.” Although he acknowledged that other Republican candidates could benefit from Trump’s indictment or imprisonment, he emphasized the importance of all candidates standing up for the principles of democracy and constitutional republic. Using the justice system against political opponents during a campaign is not a viable way of governing the country.
If a Trump indictment were to happen, it would be a national disaster, un-American, and divisive, according to Ramaswamy. He tweeted that the ruling party should not use police power to arrest its rivals, and the American people should be allowed to decide who governs. Bragg should reconsider his action and put aside partisan politics to preserve the Constitutional republic, Ramaswamy said.
Ramaswamy told The Epoch Times that he made the public announcement to dissuade Bragg from going ahead with the indictment, and to prevent further division in the already-riven country. As of this writing, there has been no public reaction from any candidate other than Trump himself.
Apart from his position on the potential Trump indictment, Ramaswamy’s campaign is not as much of a long shot as some may have thought.
