Rugby-‘Roll on the World Cup’: Ireland in bullish mood after Grand Slam win
Ireland captain Johnny Sexton expressed confidence after his team completed a Six Nations Grand Slam, stating, “Roll on the World Cup.” Despite their 29-16 victory over England not being their best, Ireland has won 10 straight games and 22 out of their last 24 games.
Ireland coach Andy Farrell acknowledged the team’s potential, “We’re a good side that’s nowhere near reached its potential”. The coach also mentioned the importance of the World Cup and spoke about the team’s development during the summer, saying he expects Ireland to perform well at the 2023 tournament in France.
Ireland has raised expectations ahead of the 2015 and 2019 World Cups, winning Six Nations but failing to go beyond the quarter-final stage in either. Sexton praised Farrell’s approach of openly talking about building towards the 2023 tournament in France and said that, like last year’s series victory in New Zealand, the Grand Slam is another “very special” part of that journey.
Farrell saved his highest praise for Sexton, calling him Ireland’s best player ever and a Grand Slam winner on St. Patrick’s Day in front of his own crowd, an “unbelievably filling” occurrence.
