New biblical film His Only Son to be first crowdfunded theatrical release this Easter
“His Only Son,” a movie about the biblical account of Abraham and his son Isaac, has made history by becoming the first nationwide theatrical release to be crowdfunded. The film is being distributed by Angel Studios, the same company that produced “The Chosen.”
The crowdfunding for “His Only Son” reached its capacity in 100 hours, according to Neal Harmon, the CEO and co-founder of Angel Studios. Harmon says the company is responding to audience demand by at least tripling the number of theaters showing the film nationwide and allocating their most valuable marketing resources behind the film.
The film’s story depicts the biblical account of when God asks Abraham to sacrifice Isaac. It will be released on March 31st.
Angel Studios is known for producing faith-based films and TV shows. Its most recent success includes the third season of “The Chosen,” a streaming series that follows the life of Jesus.
“His Only Son” is not their only success. Lionsgate’s faith-based film “Jesus Revolution,” featuring Kelsey Grammer in the role of Southern California pastor Chuck Smith, has more than quadrupled its original earning expectations by grossing nearly $39.5 million domestically.
Excited about the response from supporters, Harmon said that “we’ve worked hard to reach families and let them know they have a home at Angel. The audience is finding that home, and they’re showing up to support both our projects and projects from friends like Jon Erwin that also amplify light. It’s a thrilling time to be in this space.”
