Two people missing after jumping into central Florida lake
Police officials are currently searching for two individuals who drowned in Lake Eloise in Winter Haven, Florida, after jumping out of their boat to save a woman, Velcky Velasquez. The victims were identified as Jeffrey Marrero and Orlando Ortiz. A news release states that both men were not strong swimmers and ended up drowning. Meanwhile, the woman whom they tried to save was found treading water a distance away from the boat. The lake has been closed off to the public as authorities continue the search with the use of side scan sonar and an underwater drone.
The incident occurred last Saturday when one of the two children on the boat, Marrero’s 10-year-old daughter, called 911 to report that they were alone on the boat, which was floating away due to the wind and heavy water chop. Deputies Glenda Eichholtz and Jonathan Munoz arrived and were able to rescue the girls and Velasquez with the help of a nearby Good Samaritan who was putting his boat into a canal. They are still searching for Marrero and Ortiz.
Local authorities are working with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office underwater search and recovery team in locating the missing individuals. The victims’ families seek prayers and privacy during this difficult time.
