Biden quietly signs COVID-19 origins bill into law
President Joe Biden has quietly signed a bill requiring the declassification of intelligence on the origins of COVID-19 into law.
The White House announced the move in a press release Monday night, folding it into the same statement saying he had signed a congressional resolution overturning a controversial Washington, D.C., crime measure. Biden had previously indicated that he would sign the Washington crime bill reversal, but the White House had stayed mum on what it would do about the COVID-19 bill once it cleared Congress.
The White House had been noncommittal about the COVID-19 legislation before it passed. However, Biden issued a statement directly addressing the COVID-19 bill shortly afterward. In his statement, Biden shared Congress’s goal of releasing the most information possible about the origins of COVID-19.
“We need to get to the bottom of COVID-19’s origins to help ensure we can better prevent future pandemics,” Biden said.
A veto would have been difficult to sustain. The COVID-19 legislation passed both houses of Congress unanimously, far exceeding the two-thirds majorities required to override a veto.
Biden vetoed the first bill of his presidency on Monday, an anti-environmental, social, and governance, or ESG, measure.
