Biden tells Netanyahu he’s never seen tensions in Israel so high
President Joe Biden recently made a private phone call to Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu where he expressed his concerns over the current high level of tensions in the country, according to sources familiar with the matter as reported by Axios. Biden urged Netanyahu to find a compromise quickly on the controversial legislation recently proposed by Netanyahu’s government, which aims to overhaul the system for choosing judges and allow the Knesset to overrule Supreme Court decisions through a simple majority.
Netanyahu, in response, assured the president that he is doing his best to resolve the issue but needs more time and space to do so, emphasizing that he doesn’t want to fix one imbalance by creating another. The situation in Israel has been tense in the last few months, with over half a million Israelis protesting against the proposed reforms. Some opposition to the plan has also been noted in the military.
It is almost unheard of for a US president to comment on the internal affairs of its Middle Eastern ally, indicating the severity of the situation.
Netanyahu later met with the heads of the ruling coalition parties and announced some concessions to the controversial judicial reform plans. However, the opposition viewed the concessions as inadequate and pledged to continue the protests.
