Russia Claims To Have Intercepted Two U.S. Bombers Over Baltic Sea
On Monday, Russia said one of its fighter jets intercepted two US B-52 bombers over the Baltic Sea. This potential provocation comes merely days after Russian aircraft forced a US drone into the Black Sea.
The Russian Defense Ministry stated a Russian Su-35 was scrambled towards the US planes approaching Russia. However, the fighter returned to its base when the B-52s turned away. The statement included footage said to be from the Russian plane’s cockpit, demonstrating one of the two US aircrafts.
The Defense Ministry mentioned on the Telegram messaging app, “On March 20, radar facilities of the air defense forces of the Western military district on duty over the Baltic Sea detected two air targets flying in the direction of the Russian Federation’s state border. No violation of the state border of the Russian Federation was permitted.”
There has been no immediate response from the US on this occurrence. The incident occurred as Chinese President Xi Jinping was in Moscow having discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, attempting to put an end to the Russia-Ukraine war. Additionally, it followed two Russian nuclear bombers flying over the Sea of Japan for several hours, just as Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was visiting Ukraine.
Last week, Russian pilots harassed a $32 million US MQ-9 Reaper spy drone. The pilots dumped fuel on it before one of the Russian fighter jets collided with the surveillance drone’s propeller, causing US forces to bring the drone down in international waters. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu celebrated the pilots’ actions, claiming they prevented the drone from flying into airspace claimed by Russia. The White House called this “reckless” but stated it had not determined if the Russian pilots intentionally downed the US drone.
Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff stated, “Incidents happen, and clearly we do not seek armed conflict with Russia, and I believe at this point we should investigate this incident and move on from there.”
