Xi invites Putin to China

As part of his visit to Moscow, Chinese President Xi Jinping invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to China. He invited Putin to the third Belt and Road Forum for international cooperation, which is scheduled to be held in China in late 2023, according to Xinhua News Agency.

The Belt and Road Forum is an international forum for all nations that are part of China’s Belt and Road initiative, which is a massive global infrastructure development strategy led by China.

The Belt and Road Initiative has the Chinese government investing in more than 150 countries and international organizations. It is the centerpiece of President Xi Jinping’s foreign policy, which aims to make China a global leader.

Putin previously attended the first two forums held by China in 2017 and 2019. During his three-day trip to Moscow, Xi also invited Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin to visit China, and called for regular meetings between the Russian Prime Minister and the Chinese premier.

The main reason behind Xi’s visit to Moscow is to strengthen the relationship between the two nations and discuss the war in Ukraine. China has previously called for a ceasefire and peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine and had released a 12-point plan to end the conflict. However, the United States has been skeptical of China and alleged that Beijing is considering providing Russia with military support to aid in its war effort against Ukraine. Antony Blinken, Secretary of State, expects Xi to emphasize a ceasefire during his trip to Moscow, saying that any peace plan must include maintaining Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“Any plan that does not prioritize this critical principle is a stalling tactic at best or is merely seeking to facilitate an unjust outcome,” Blinken said. “That is not constructive diplomacy.”

The White House has criticized Xi for providing the Russian president with “diplomatic cover” after the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Putin on Friday for alleged war crimes in Ukraine. Xi’s trip to Russia is his first trip since he secured his unprecedented third term earlier in March.
