America’s Civil War Of The Mind
The author, David Marcus, who recently moved to West Virginia, writes about the Civil War and how the local citizenry passed back and forth from Union to Confederacy. He sees America today as contemplating a new Civil War or national divorce. However, this will not be a military battle. The fighting is on the high ground of cable news and the endless fields of social media.
The battle lines in this new Civil War are about reality itself. The Left believes that reality is a blank slate, free from history’s sins. Meanwhile, the Right holds on to the reality of the past, seeing new definitions of gender, racism, and freedom as a dead end. The struggle is, in some ways, similar to the AnteBellum period which attempted to accommodate the issue of slavery, but ultimately failed. Today, issues around gender and race identity are proving difficult to accommodate, and both sides are looking to completely destroy the other side.
Shelby Foote, a Civil War historian, spoke of the great compromise, where northerners admitted that the South fought bravely for a cause in which they believed, and the South admitting the Union was best not divided. This compromise took a long time to obtain, and tempers had to cool down over a century. Today, it seems as if the compromise has collapsed, and America is far from believing that those who disagree with us are acting in good faith.
Civil war is a term that many are hesitant to use too often, but the reality is that America is at war with itself, in battles over reality, science, education, and the nature of American identity itself. At its core, this is a struggle for which version of reality will win.
