Meteorologist Who Fainted During Live Broadcast Speaks Up About Collapse
The Los Angeles-based meteorologist who recently fainted during a live broadcast has spoken up about the incident, stating that she collapsed due to a medical condition known as vasovagal syncope.
Alissa Carlson Schwartz, a meteorologist for KCAL, appeared on “CBS Mornings” to provide an update on her health after the video of her fainting went viral. After being released from the hospital, she told Gayle King that she wasn’t feeling well prior to going on air.
According to Carlson Schwartz, she began to feel nauseous 15-minutes prior to the incident, as she had consumed a lot of coffee on an empty stomach and was likely a little dehydrated. Despite feeling unwell, she attempted to power through, but ultimately fainted on air.
Although she had previously been diagnosed with a leaky heart valve, Carlson Schwartz initially feared that she was having a heart attack, but tests later confirmed that vasovagal syncope was the culprit.
As per the Mayo Clinic, vasovagal syncope is a condition in which the body overreacts to certain triggers, such as emotional stress or the sight of blood. Symptoms can include sweaty palms, tunnel vision, graying of vision, and dizziness. According to CBS, when the vagus nerve is over-stimulated, the pulse rate and blood pressure can drop, resulting in fainting spells.
Following her on-air collapse, Carlson Schwartz underwent heart tests, and the findings were positive. The former Ms. America contestant advised viewers to aim for optimum health by getting enough rest, staying hydrated, and looking after themselves.
